Curious about pickleball but not sure where to begin? You're not alone. Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S., and it’s easy to see why.
Whether you're looking for a new hobby, a fun way to stay active, or just wondering what all the hype is about—this beginner’s guide will help you hit the court with confidence.
What Is Pickleball, Anyway?
Pickleball is a fun, fast-paced sport that blends elements of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton. It’s played on a smaller court with a paddle and a lightweight plastic ball. It’s beginner-friendly, low-impact, and incredibly addictive.
Whether you're competitive or just in it for fun, pickleball is a great way to get moving and meet people—especially in local pickleball communities across Texas.
The Basic Rules (No Overwhelm, We Promise)
Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect your first time out:
Games are typically played to 11 points
You serve underhand and diagonally
Only the serving team can score
Watch out for the “kitchen” (aka, the no-volley zone)
Don’t worry if this sounds confusing right now—you’ll pick it up quickly once you’re on the court.

What You’ll Need to Get Started
You don’t need fancy gear to begin. Here’s what we recommend:
A beginner-friendly paddle (lightweight is ideal)
Court shoes with good grip
Comfortable clothes you can move in
A good attitude—and maybe a friend to join you!
