Pickleball is a fun and fast-paced sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Here are some common pickleball shot definitions for you to learn:

Pickleball shots definitions

Serve:

  • The initial shot that starts each point.

  • Must be hit underhand and diagonally cross-court.

  • The server must serve from behind the baseline and land the ball in the diagonal service court.

Forehand Groundstroke:

  • A shot hit with the face of the paddle on the player's dominant side.

  • Typically used both offensively and defensively.

Backhand Groundstroke:

  • A shot hit with the face of the paddle on the player's non-dominant side.

  • Typically used both offensively and defensively.

Dink:

  • A soft shot hit just inches over the net (ideally a paddle height or lower) with the intention of placing the ball in the NVZ/Kitchen.

  • Used to set up a point and control the pace of the game.

Volley:

  • A shot that is hit in the air before the ball bounces.

  • Players often approach the NVZ/Kitchen by volleying effectively.

Third Shot Drop:

  • A shot intentionally hit softly and close to the net, ideally landing in the NVZ/Kitchen, making it challenging for the opponent to return.

  • Used to catch opponents off guard.

Lob:

  • A high, arching shot hit over the opponent's head, aiming to land deep in their court.

  • Used to push opponents back and create an opportunity to move forward.

Topspin:

  • Adding forward rotation to the ball by brushing the paddle upward upon contact.

  • Generates a downward trajectory after the bounce, making it harder for opponents to return.

Slice:

  • Adding backspin to the ball by slicing the paddle downward upon contact.

  • Results in a lower trajectory and may cause the ball to skid off the court.

Drive:

  • A powerful and flat shot hit with pace, often used to put pressure on opponents.

  • Requires good timing and technique to control the ball.

Erne:

  • A shot hit by a player standing outside the court and reaching over the net to volley.

  • Often used to surprise opponents and gain a strategic advantage.

Around-the-Post (ATP):

  • Hitting the ball around the outside of the net post, a challenging and impressive shot.

  • Usually done when the ball is very close to the net and toward the outer part of the court.

Remember that mastering these shots and understanding when to use them can significantly enhance your pickleball skills and strategy on the court.
